WHITE CULTURE?

When you look up the terms “Black Culture” and “White Culture”, you are hit with two very different concepts:

The former, celebratory, accepted, acclaimed, is a term which describes how Black people have fought back against systematic oppression and racism, driven positive political change, kept their differing cultures alive, developed their own music, oral and literary traditions and much more besides.

The latter term is defined only in negative, derogatory and apologetic terms. White Culture is portrayed only as something that has oppressed others, it is the deep state, it is the police, the judiciary and, even to this day, a force that strives to keep ‘other cultures down’ and so forth.

BUT White Culture should also be celebrated and accepted. There should be as much pride in White Culture as there is in Black Culture.

How so, if it is has been that negative and oppressive force?

Because White Culture has not ONLY been that negative and oppressive force!

White Culture - as with Black Culture - is also a story of upheaval, political and social discrimination, of different (white) ethnic groups oppressing other (white) ethnic groups and of people uniting to push back in a positive fashion against that. White Culture, again as with Black Culture, is also music and great literature, science, thought, religion and poetry. White Culture is also fine architecture, art, humour, wars both for and against injustice, trade unionism, the class struggle, the fight for women’s rights and very much more besides.

Our view?

The misappropriation of the term White Culture needs to stop. And it is time - it is long past time - that the very many positive aspects of White Culture were also accepted and acclaimed. For what good can it do, can it ever do, to portray “White Culture” as only a negative, oppressive force and to laud “Black Culture”? Both cultures have things to be deeply ashamed of and BOTH have much to be proud of and much to celebrate!
